Medical examination for seafarers is a set of measures carried out by specially authorized medical workers to check the health of a seafarer in order to determine suitability for professional activity. In addition, the medical examination is carried out in order to determine the level of permissible physical and psychological stress of a seafarer in a closed team, as well as to protect the crew of the ship, which works in a confined space from various infectious diseases.
The legislation in the field of maritime activities obliges each candidate for seafarers or a member of the ship’s crew to undergo a medical examination and provide an appropriate conclusion on passing the medical examination and fitness for maritime activities. International treaties and agreements regulate the form and requirements for international medical documents, which are issued in accordance with international maritime standards.
Sailors are required to undergo a medical examination annually. The requirements for a medical examination of the seafarers are relatively high. If a sailor has chronic diseases, the medical examination may refuse to issue a positive conclusion.
What doctors do sailors see and what tests do they take?
According to the order of the Ministry of Health, in order to obtain a certificate of passing a medical examination, the following specialists are required to provide a conclusion:
occupational pathologist;
dentist;
surgeon;
ophthalmologist;
neurologist;
otolaryngologist;
urologist-venereologist.
gynecologist (for women)
You will need a blood and urine test, blood biochemistry, syphilis, hepatitis B and C, HIV, fluorography, abdominal ultrasound and an electrocardiological examination. If you do not know your Rh factor and blood type, you must take the appropriate tests when passing the medical examination.
For persons who carry out ship safety instructions and make such decisions, the following body functions are additionally examined: sensorimotor reactions, reaction to object movement, attention and speed of its switching, visual and auditory memory, emotional lability, lack of fatigue, resistance to monotony, orientation in space, speed of decision-making.

How to prepare and what do you need to present for a medical examination?
To undergo a medical examination, take the following documents with you:
A referral from your employer;
A seaman’s passport, a foreign passport;
A vaccination card;
Results of the previous medical examination (if available);
Photos.
Important! If your work is related to the kitchen (chef, bartender, waiter), a salmonella test is mandatory. You can do this analysis with us (you need to come with the analysis) or with the ready result. How long is a medical examination for seamen valid and where is the best place to undergo it?
